The National Farmers Union Mutual Insurance Society (NFU Mutual) is a UK-registered mutual insurance composite, who pride themselves on their community spirit and believe their strength is in their mutuality. NFU Mutual is built upon pillars of cooperation between farmers and agricultural workers, with each member looking after the interests of the others. Since 1910 new members have been encouraged to involve themselves in the composite, caring for the individuals as well as the businesses. Presided over by Chief Executive Lindsay Sinclair and proudly boasting almost 4,000 members, this Tiddlington, Stratford-upon-Avon based business has quickly spread. NFU Mutual distinguishes itself by being owned not by its shareholders, but its policyholders.
Many of the agents of NFU are self-employed and trust the business to look after their financial interests. NFU Mutual sells its policies according to their customer base. Feeling that their clients prefer personal contact, they sell their policies through a network of agents and enjoy a close relationship with, though is not technically under the same umbrella as, the National Farmers Union. From 1980 the NFU Mutual has accepted risks from outside the community and set up NFU Mutual Direct in 1996 to provide call centre services. For all these expansions, NFU Mutual still proudly considers itself first and foremost for the benefit of farmers.
