Gamma Imaging successfully creates museum-quality reproductions of Hans-Ulrich Buchwald’s work. The “Giclee Printing” experts at Gamma Imaging utilize ultra-high resolution scanning and printing technology to create digital prints of Buchwald’s watercolours.
When Colby Luckenbill of Colby Gallery, Chicago, needed archival quality reproductions of Hans-Ulrich Buchwald’s watercolours for a 60-year retrospective of the German artist’s work, she turned to Gamma Imaging. I decided to do the same thing for Hans-Ulrich’s work, as part of our retrospective, and after a lot of research I identified Gamma as the ideal source.
“Many of the French Impressionists and modern artists of the early 20th century, such as Picasso, Monet and Cezanne, created signed limited edition prints to make their work more accessible and affordable,” explains Luckenbill. “I decided to do the same thing for Hans-Ulrich’s work, as part of our retrospective, and after a lot of research I identified Gamma as the ideal source.”
The results achieved by Gamma’s Giclee printing experts were beyond Luckenbill’s expectations. “I am blown away by the brilliance and fidelity of the prints,” Luckenbill says. “We displayed them beside the originals with pride, and it was actually difficult to tell them apart. Hans-Ulrich, who flew in from Germany for the show, was very impressed.”
Giclee printing is an emerging specialty that produces fine art graphics with rich colour in the tradition of original stone lithography. Doug Goddard, President of Gamma Imaging, describes how it works: “For these reproductions, we scanned the originals with an ultra-high resolution ZBE Satellite scanner. Then we output them on our Epson Stylus Pro printer, using fine archival paper and lysonic inks, to accurately reproduce the full range of subtle colours and all the fine detail in the paintings.”
“The Giclee scanning and printing technology makes it possible to create reproductions with the look and feel of originals,” Goddard continues. “But there’s a lot more to it than just firing up an expensive scanner and printer. Our trained technicians, many of whom are artists themselves, go through a very painstaking, collaborative process of proofing and adjustment to get the prints exactly right.”
Luckenbill agrees with Goddard about the importance of Gamma’s expertise and commitment to service. “Gamma is not one of these franchise graphics labs,” she says. “They have a reputation for quality and personal attention, and worked very closely with me to guarantee our satisfaction.”
Goddard reports that the company has recently added the latest Epson Stylus Pro 9800 Professional Edition printer, to augment its line-up of Giclee printing equipment, which already includes the Ixia (Iris) printer, and Scitex Eversmart Supreme and ZBE Satellite ultra-high resolution scanners.
“The addition of the 9800 reflects our commitment to offer the very latest in world-class printing technology to our wide variety of clients,” Goddard says. “As the technology has evolved, Gamma has too — but without losing any of the hands-on craftsmanship and attention to detail that made us so successful in providing traditional photographic services.”
